The best fully managed vps hosting provider. Period.
KnownHost, founded in 2006 is a US based hosting provider specialising in Fully Managed VPS servers spanning multiple cities across the globe including Seattle, Dallas, Baltimore and Amsterdam.
While more known for their Managed VPS services, they recently launched Shared Shared, Reseller Hosting and Unmanaged VPS servers. To make this review happen, we purchased their entry-level Shared Hosting plan and their entry-level Managed VPS.
As you can see, KnownHost’s pros and cons are quite spread. Lets go over each so you can get a better understanding if KnownHost is the right web hosting provider for you.
This one is simple, any KnownHost product can be purchased on the monthly billing cycle. It is nice to see KnownHost keeping this up as many hosting providers has opted for requiring you to prepay at least 1 year.
Our VPS Hosting product was sold to us as ‘Fully Managed’ and that is what we got with KnownHost. They installed, configured and optimised our VPS server on request without any fuss.
You might think this is a false pro, after all, many providers offer Full Server Management. Truth is, at most companies you don’t get full root access and you can’t customise the VPS server to how you’d like it to be configured. Whenever your host decides to run updates they’ll include your VPS server and that is what they considered fully managed.
With KnownHost however, not only do you get full root access but they’ll do just about anything you request of them.
The last thing anyone wants is for their website to go down due to some DDoS attack. More so if you’re not even the target! If you host with KnownHost DDoS attacks will be a thing of the past with them promoting up to 500 Gbps protection.
To put that into perspective, the average DDoS attack is no more than 10 Gbps so KnownHost has you properly covered.
Who likes a questionable 30 Day Money Back Guarantee? We sure don’t! KnownHost advertises a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee on almost every page. The part they don’t mention is the money back guarantee is for new customers only.
Keep that in mind if you are ordering multiple services with them. The KnownHost Money Back Guarantee is no longer valid if you have previously hosted with them.
If this is your first service however, you should be covered.
During our tests we found this very sneaky and honestly, annoying. KnownHost advertises response times within a few minutes, this is not actually their team responses but an automated response looking as if an employee did respond.
Actual (real employee) responses were in the 30 – 35 minute range from our tests which is slower than many providers we have tested but still within very respectable numbers.
If your preferred support channel is phone or live chat then you’re probably going to want to find an alternative hosting provider. KnownHost currently only offers support via tickets and for us, it wasn’t the best.
Since our 2019 review, KnownHost has added a significant number of products to their lineup including but not limited to Shared Hosting, Reseller Hosting and NVMe VPS servers.
KnownHost is all about providing Fully Managed VPS Hosting (and we did rave about their willingness to go above and beyond) so it comes as no surprise that they have a no-fuss free migrations policy.
If your current hosting provider uses one of the following control panels, you can contact KnownHost with your current credentials and they will hand move your website for you.
If you are not using one of the above control panels, contact their team regardless and they can guide you on the best steps forward, or provide a quote for a manual migration.
In short: For a Fully Managed VPS, yes. Anything else, not really.
KnownHost is a solid web hosting provider having been around for over a decade. What sets them apart is their willingness to do almost anything you request on their Fully Managed VPS line (and yes, that includes fixing anything you break from the root access ;)).
Their Shared Hosting and Reseller Hosting product lines come with real disappointment. Given their late entry to this space they had the opportunity to design something ‘cool’ and exciting. Instead, we got standard packages that look to have been created in 2010 with all of the pesky limits. If you are in the market for a Shared Hosting provider, we would recommend giving FastComet, A2 Hosting, or GreenGeeks a look.
